ARGH 2000 Preliminary Power Ratings

The following are the preliminary pre-season ARGH power ratings for the 115 Division 1-A teams for 2000, including one team new to Division 1-A but not to my ratings: Connecticut; and one team new to the ratings that will be playing five Division 1-A games in 2000 and will be joining Division 1-A full-time in 2001: South Florida. These ratings are calculated as of information and estimates available February 1, 2000, and are not final. The final pre-season ratings will be released in July.

These power ratings are computed using the following factors: Previous year's power rating; second previous year's power rating; number of returning starters (this is estimated for the pre-preseason ratings); previous year's strength of schedule; and whether the starting quarterback is returning. The strength of each factor varies each year based on what has happened in the three previous years. This year, the factor for previous year's power rating is down; the factor for returning starters is down but still quite high, and the factors for second previous year's power rating and returning quarterback are roughly the same as for last year. The factor for previous year's strength of schedule is back after a one-year hiatus. The factor for a returning coach is gone for this year due to a particularly successful year by new coaches in 1999. This factor will return in future years.

The final pre-season power ratings will include a factor for recruiting, new for the first time in 2000. The preliminary pre-season ratings do not include a factor for recruiting.

The estimated home field advantage for 2000 will be .609.
